What is Babywearing International?

Babywearing International, Inc. (BWI) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to promote babywearing as a universally accepted practice, with benefits for both child and caregiver, through education and support. Babywearing International of Wichita is a local chapter of BWI supporting Wichita, Kansas and surrounding areas.

For more detailed information about BWI mission, goals and beliefs you can visit our national affiliate website here.

What is "babywearing?"

Babywearing is the practice of carrying an infant or toddler in a sling or other soft sided baby carrier.
Babywearing promotes bonding, supports breastfeeding, can help combat postpartum depression, and makes caregiving easier.  Research suggests that carried babies sleep, feed, and grow better. One study found that carried 6-week-olds cried 43% less than other children. Babywearing is not about any particular parenting style or philosophy.  Any caregiver can do it: moms, dads, grandparents, siblings, sitters, nurses, or doulas.   There are safe and effective carrier options for every budget and taste.

What do we do?
First and foremost, we are about educating. All BWI chapters are led by Volunteer Babywearing Educators (VBEs) with extensive knowledge of different types of baby carriers and babywearing safety, and Chapter Support Volunteers (CSVs) that aid the chapter in non-educational tasks. While Babywearing International chapters do not sell or endorse specific brands of baby carriers, this chapter maintains a lending library so that members and attendees can try a variety of carriers to determine what meets their individual needs. At our monthly chapter meetings we offer education on babywearing safety and offer support to anyone who is interested in getting more information or assistance with their own baby carriers. Our VBEs will give demonstrations, answer questions, assist caregivers in finding and using a certain type of baby carrier, and offer support and encouragement to babywearing parents and caregivers.

Second, we are a community of parents and caregivers who support and empower each other in the journey through parenthood. Many of our members form long lasting friendships that begin at our chapter meetings and outreach events. Even after parents have mastered the basics of babywearing, they come to the meetings simply to enjoy other the company of other families who also love babywearing.

BWI of Wichita currently holds one education meeting a month which are always free and open to the public. You do not have to be a paid member of our group to come to the meetings and get help. We welcome anyone and everyone to our meetings. They are a family-friendly event; babies, toddlers, parents, grandparents, other caregivers, and everyone in-between are invited to join us!

Does it cost anything?
It does not cost anything to attend a meeting or try anything in our library at meetings.  Membership ($30/year) grants you access to the lending library. You're able to check out a carrier at a meeting for the month; carriers are due back at the next month's meeting. You may also check out a carrier for a  single month for one-time $8.00 fee. Should you decide to become a member after, the fee may carry over towards the $30 membership.

If you're interested in becoming a member, you can join at any of our meetings. In addition, you can fill out the membership application and contact a chapter leader for payment options.
All official BWI events will be listed on our public page and shared to the Facebook group.
